Kind of makes you realize that the grass really isn't greener on the other side, no matter what we think.

To be honest I always knew about the cost of ownership in Europe, but forgot just how taxed their cars are. Yikes. Meanwhile Japan has the shaken tech certification exams, which makes having an older car so much more difficult. Overall it's stuff like this that makes me ok with having that stupid 25 year import rule in return for cheap gas, no silly taxes or exams (except if your in California lol), and a plentiful bounty of Miatas, Fox bodies, and Civics to autocross, track day, or drag to one's content.

Here in the UK gas is $10 a gallon insurance is almost $2000 for me on a 1 litre shit box and tax is around $300 a year on that same shitbox. Then yearly MOT inspection at around $80. It ain't cheap...

But California has perfect weather for keeping old cars rust free, and for driving them year round and with the top down. Lol.

Well, in Indonesia we got the first 2.

No import restriction (import all the things!), lower cost of gas (2 bucks per gallon), but massive import tax, like very massive.

If you want to import a car with engine smaller than 1.5l, thou shall be taxed 75% from the price of the car. 1.5-3.5l, 100%. More than 3.5, thou are being dick (in government's eyes) and punished by 150% tax.

Canada gets the last two, and is better than the USA on the first. Unfortunately, to be punished, we are given a higher chance of rust.

Except BC. Screw them. /jealousy

There are ways around smog tests. There's no way around road salt.

A car stuck in the garage isn't doing much good is it?

If you have multiple cars at least one has to be in the garage. Or more than one...

Well look at you, Mr. FiveCarGarage. Around here, garages are for protecting your paint from the sun. A winter beater is a car without air conditioning.

Well I live in Texas now so salt isn't something I have to deal with anymore. I like keeping cars in garages less for protection from the elements and more for protection for other people...

Don't Texans just shoot anybody that walks on their property? If I lived there and saw somebody approaching my car I'd just empty my Colt .45 into them, and ask questions later.

It's a false dichotomy (trichotomy?), though. It needn't be pick two, as none of those is at all dependent upon another. But it is the reality of the current state of affairs.

"or exams (except if your in California lol)"

I know PA and MD both also have Inspections. I'm curious now what states do/don't have what kind of tech inspections.

We don't here in CO, and I wish we did. There are a lot of seriously dangerous vehicles here, usually driven by uninsured drivers. We do have emissions testing (easy to pass) in the Front Range infamous Brown Cloud zone. At least a tire-tread check as part of that would be helpful. "These are bald. Get new ones or keep it home until you do. No registration renewal until then."
